South African Radio Personalities Celebrate World Radio Day. Today marks a very significant day to radio personalities and listeners alike. It is World Radio Day, as proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO Member States and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as International Day of the United Nations,

As one of the most accessible types of media, radio plays a vital role in promoting diversity, dialogue and solidarity. It contributes to the achievement of its international objectives by supporting populations through climate disasters such as tropical storms and floods. Radio also helps with the dissemination of fact-based information, listeners’ voices, and dedicated radio shows.

Here in South Africa, Radio has become one of the most important mediums of news and entertainment. People listen to the radio in the comfort of their homes, while commuting to work, at major events and so forth. Almost everyone countrywide has their favorite radio station, show and personality.

Just to show how important radio is in this country, there are various awards annually, where radio stations and personalities are given whats’ due to them. Some radio stations also have their won awards, celebrating the talents in the entertainment industry. Radio stations also sponsor major events, run massive competitions and giveaways, as a way to appreciate listeners.

Today, quite a number of radio personalities have taken to social media to celebrate their day. The likes of Robert Marawa, Proverb, Karabo Ntshweng, Loyiso Bala, Sol Phenduka and many others penned beautiful messages in honor of World Radio Day.
