Laduma Ngxokolo Responds to Allegations that MaXhosa Brand is Owned By the Ruperts
Laduma Ngxokolo Responds to Allegations that MaXhosa Brand is Owned By the Ruperts. MAXHOSA AFRICA, is one of the biggest South African fashion brands. The knitwear brand was founded in 2010 by the talented Laduma Ngxokolo.
In 2010 Laduma’s project won the South African Society of Dyers and Colourists’ design competition. This earned him a trip to London where he was awarded first prize in an international competition. He then decided to develop a Xhosa-inspired collection of knitwear using traditional Xhosa bead-work, colors and motifs.
He decided to call the name of my brand MaXhosa by Laduma. This was to showcase the beauty of the Xhosa people and translate it in a modern way that actually appeals to the youth. After seeing the growth and potential of his business, Laduma decided to relocate from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. In his recent Podcast and Chill interview, he stated that white tourists were his main market.
MaXhosa items were available at a shop called Ultra Luxury Boutique which sold expensive African Luxury Products. One lady at the Design Indaba Conference in Cape Town ordered 300 pieces of Maxhosa.
“ I later learned that the lady who placed the first big order which was 300 pieces of MaXhosa, and she was like I will sell your clothes like its art. I will do justice to your brand. She’s an Afrikaans lady, from the Rupert family, Johann Rupert’s daughter,” Laduma told MacG and Sol.
The two have since been in a great business partnership. Even though that’s the case, Laduma added that they went independent seven years ago but still link up for work.
A social media user has just shared a clip from Laduma’s interview. The wrote that MaXhosa is owned by the Ruperts.
“You wish,” Laduma responded to the allegations.
