A day ago, some tweeps shared how pissed off they get when people call them Shangaan instead of Tsonga. One even stated that Shangaan is a derogatory word and every time the phrase is used it is to disrespect and disdain them. “It is not hard to comprehend honestly! Stop being ignorant,” she added.
Sho Madjozi joined in on the conversation, and took her followers down memory lane. The multi-award winning musician, author and entrepreneur stated that “Tsonga” clans have lived in Southern Africa for almost a thousand years.
“When Shaka defeated the Ndwandwe, 200 yrs ago, a Ndwandwe general called Soshangane fled to “Mozambique,” where he unified various Tsonga clans and formed the Gaza empire. The “Tsonga” speaking people in “Mozambique” under Soshangane were called Shangane’s people (shangaan),” she said.
She also shared some of the reasons it may be offensive to call Tsonga people in South Africa Shangaan. One of the reasons is that all Shangaan people in SA are Tsonga but not all Tsonga people are Shangaan. Tsonga people who were never under Soshangane may be offended by the implication that they were once under Nguni rule.
The word Shangaan, according to Sho Madjozi took on a xenophobic twist because the new arrivals were fleeing a war, as some were dirty and homeless and sort of wandering before they settled.
