HR Intern Opportunity at Social Housing Regulatory Authority Johannesburg Parktown

The Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) is inviting applications for an HR Intern opportunity in Johannesburg Parktown as part of its two-year Young Graduate Internship Programme. SHRA is a Schedule 3A public entity of the Department of Human Settlements, established under the Public Finance Management Act, No. 1 of 1999, with a mandate linked to the provision of rental social housing for low to medium-income earners in terms of the Social Housing Act, No. 16 of 2008. The internship is aimed at unemployed young South African graduates below the age of 35 who are looking to gain meaningful workplace experience in Human Resources. The HR Intern will report to the Human Resources Manager and will receive practical exposure to day-to-day HR operations within a public sector environment. Applications close on 5 October 2026, and late applications will not be considered.

The SHRA Young Graduate Programme is structured as a two-year internship designed to help graduates bridge the gap between academic study and professional employment. The HR Intern will support the Human Resources function while gaining practical knowledge of recruitment, employee administration, HR records, wellness initiatives, training and development, compliance and employment-related processes. This opportunity is well suited to graduates who are interested in developing a career in Human Resources Management, Human Resource Development, Industrial Psychology or Labour Relations. Candidates will be expected to maintain high standards of confidentiality because the role involves working with employee records and other sensitive information. The internship also provides an opportunity to develop administrative, communication, organisational and professional skills in a structured working environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative support to the Human Resources function and assist with the day-to-day activities of the HR department.
  • Assist with recruitment and selection processes.
  • Support onboarding and offboarding activities and ensure relevant employee documentation is properly maintained.
  • Maintain and update employee records and HR information in line with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Assist with leave administration and other employee-related records.
  • Support the preparation of HR reports, correspondence, presentations and other HR-related documents.
  • Assist with the coordination and administration of employee wellness initiatives.
  • Support training and development activities within the organisation.
  • Respond to HR queries and provide general employee administration support.
  • Assist with maintaining confidential personnel files and ensure records are properly organised and audit ready.
  • Support HR projects, events and other departmental initiatives as required.
  • Gain practical exposure to HR policies, procedures and applicable employment legislation.
  • Perform general administrative duties within the Human Resources function.
  • Continuously develop professional knowledge and practical skills within the Human Resources field.
  • Assist with ad hoc HR audits and related compliance activities.
  • Handle employee information and sensitive documentation with appropriate discretion and confidentiality.
  • Support the Human Resources Manager and wider HR team with assigned responsibilities throughout the internship.

Requirements and Skills

  • Applicants must be unemployed young graduates below the age of 35.
  • Candidates must be South African citizens.
  • A recognised three-year Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma at NQF Level 6 or 7 is required.
  • Relevant qualifications include Human Resources Management, Human Resource Development, Industrial Psychology, Labour Relations or a related field.
  • Computer literacy is required, particularly proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills are required.
  • Good attention to detail is important when maintaining HR records and preparing documentation.
  • Candidates must be able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee information responsibly.
  • Applicants should demonstrate a willingness to learn and develop within the Human Resources environment.
