Dis-Chem Pharmacies is hiring a Merchandiser for its Claremont store in Cape Town, Western Cape. This permanent retail position is suited to candidates who enjoy working with customers, maintaining attractive store displays and ensuring products are available and correctly presented on the shop floor. The successful candidate will support daily merchandising activities while maintaining Dis-Chem’s operational, customer service and health and safety standards. The role offers an opportunity for an entry-level retail professional to gain valuable experience in a busy FMCG environment. Applications close on 1 September 2026, so interested candidates should apply before the closing date.

Job Overview and Responsibilities

The Merchandiser will play an important role in keeping the Claremont store well stocked, organised and visually appealing. The position requires attention to detail, physical stamina and a customer-focused approach. The successful candidate will work closely with management and other store employees to ensure that merchandise moves efficiently from the storeroom to the sales floor.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure delivered stock and stock pulled from the storeroom are stored and packed in the correct spaces and within the required timeframes.
  • Check that products on shelves have not reached their sell-by dates.
  • Ensure the full range of products is available on the shelves whenever possible.
  • Rotate stock regularly according to the FIFO principle.

  • Flatten boxes after unpacking stock and place them in the designated area.
  • Keep front shop shelves and products neat, visible and correctly priced and labelled.
  • Report price discrepancies to management.
  • Stay informed about current and newly introduced products.
  • Build, face up, replenish and maintain merchandising displays.
  • Maintain the daily physical upkeep of the store and merchandise displays.
  • Take responsibility for designated stock in the storeroom and on the shop floor.
  • Assist with loading and off-loading stock.
  • Ensure products without barcodes are clearly marked.
  • Assist with back shopping when required.

  • Resolve customer stock queries efficiently and professionally.
  • Wear the correct uniform and name badge at all times.
  • Handle merchandise carefully to minimise losses.
  • Follow Dis-Chem policies, procedures, standard operating procedures and health and safety regulations.

The role requires someone who can work efficiently in a fast-paced retail environment while maintaining high merchandising standards. You will need to move between the storeroom and shop floor, replenish products, maintain displays and assist customers throughout the day. Good organisation is important because merchandise must be placed correctly and stock rotation must happen consistently. You will also need to identify and report problems such as damaged products, expired stock, incorrect pricing and low stock levels. A reliable and responsible approach will help ensure that the store remains ready for customers.

Candidates must meet the following essential requirements:

  • Grade 12 or Matric.

At least one year of retail experience will be advantageous. Previous experience with merchandising standards or FMCG operations can also strengthen an application. Knowledge of products and categories will be useful in maintaining accurate and effective displays. Experience analysing ZMORE reports for ordering and stocktaking will be an added advantage. Bilingual candidates and those who can identify and report suspicious behaviour involving customers or employees may also be considered favourably.

Dis-Chem is looking for a candidate with a strong command of English and a presentable, professional approach. Effective communication with customers, management and colleagues is essential for the role. You should be trustworthy, honest and able to manage your time effectively. Customer service is also an important part of the position, as merchandisers may need to assist shoppers with product and stock queries. Candidates should also be comfortable working as part of a team while taking responsibility for their assigned duties.
