Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking motivated and ambitious candidates to join its Alberton team as a Dispensary Support employee at the Newmarket Lifestyle store. This fixed-term opportunity is designed for individuals who want to build a career in the pharmaceutical sector and qualify as a Basic Pharmacist Assistant. Successful candidates will receive workplace training and exposure to pharmacy operations while working towards registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).

Job Overview

The Dispensary Support position serves as an entry point into the pharmacy profession. Employees will be placed in a structured learning environment where they will gain practical experience and develop the skills required to become qualified Basic Pharmacist Assistants. The programme focuses on pharmaceutical principles, medication handling, dispensary administration, stock control, customer service, and healthcare support.

Once learners successfully complete the required training and register as learner basic assistants with the SAPC, they will continue developing their pharmacy knowledge under the supervision of qualified pharmacists. Permanent employment opportunities may be offered upon successful qualification.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines under pharmacist supervision
• Support the compounding and preparation of non-sterile medicines according to approved procedures
• Assist with unpacking, merchandising, and organising pharmacy stock
• Maintain cleanliness and organisation of dispensary and OTC shelves
• Learn to interpret prescriptions accurately and professionally
• Assist with medication picking, packing, labelling, and preparation processes
• Ensure all medications are checked and approved by a pharmacist before dispensing
• Monitor medicine expiry dates and shelf organisation
• Assist with stock control and inventory management activities
• Follow up with patients regarding prescriptions and appointments when required
• Support call centre activities and patient service telephone calls
• Provide health promotion information to customers under supervision
• Assist with chronic medication, HIV, AIDS, and oncology authorisation processes
• Report stock shortages, errors, and inventory concerns to management
• Receive and process dispensary stock according to company procedures

Requirements And Skills

• Grade 12, Matric or Senior Certificate
• Pure Mathematics with a minimum of 50%
• Life Sciences and/or Physical Science with an average of at least 50%
• Ability to pass the SAPC proficiency test required for learner registration
• Strong communication skills in English and a second language
• Good customer service and interpersonal skills
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Computer literacy and numerical ability
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Problem-solving and conflict management skills
• Professional conduct and integrity
• Team player with a willingness to learn
• Trustworthy and accountable work ethic

Advantageous Qualifications And Experience

• Retail FMCG or pharmacy retail experience
• Previous Dis-Chem experience with a strong performance record
• Knowledge of family planning and complementary medicine products
• Additional language proficiency
• Experience with Unisolv, SAP, or E-Scripting systems
