Mbalenhle Mavimbela Empathizes With Abuse Victims As She Recalls How Painful It Was Playing Hlomu. If you have notice, many people have suddenly changed their profile pictures to purple. This has come after women’s rights advocacy group Women For Change called for gender-based violence to be declared a national disaster. The organization then urged social media users to put up purple profile pictures in solidarity.
Many celebrities have headed the call, among them Bonang Matheba, Tyla, Thembi Seete, Loot Love, Enhle Mbali, DJ Zinhle, Nadia Nakai, Nomzamo Mbatha, Zola Nombona, Thando Thabethe, Liesl Laurie, Cindly Mahlangu, Musa Mthombeni, and Karabo Mareka. They have shown that they stand in solidarity against any form of gender based violence.
Mbalenhle Mavimbela, is also among those who has joined the movement. She has put up a purple profile picture, and went on to do more. The multi-award winning actress and musician, decided to pay tribute to Hlomu, a character she payed on The Wife series. Hlomu endured abuse from her husband, which at some point caused miscarriage. Mbale notes that playing the character affected her so much, that it wasn’t easy going out in public. She also pledged her support to gender based violence victims.
“UkuXolisa akupholisi ,kuyadlulisa k’phela . 💜 I remember playing this role and almost losing my mind because I couldn’t believe that the emotions I went through are someone’s reality . I would ask my directors in confusion , why do I have to cry so much and when will she be strong and stand her ground ?!!! ..and when I come home my sister would be worried at how I would go straight to sleep without doing the things I loved . 😭 Going out in public wouldn’t help either because i encountered a lot of victims young and old that would cry and share their story. My DMz would be flooding with essays , and I felt so helpless.
