Renowned Photographer Austin Malema Gushes Over Photographing One Of South Africa’s Radio Icons. He has taken pictures of stars both locally and internationally. The likes of Thuso Mbedu, Anna Wintour, Kendall Jenner, Zendaya, Jaden Smith, Chris Brown, Eva Longoria, Caster Semenya and K.O, have all been captured by his lens.
Despite being 15 years in the game, and all that he has achieved, Austin Malema still has chills, when he photographs certain individuals. This became evident, when he got the opportunity to work with Glen Lewis. The celebrity photographer shares that, he first came across Glen on Muvhango, the original Edward Mukwevho. Back them the SABC2 drama was so popular, more so since it was the first ever Tshivenda drama series. Every cast member instantly became a star, and so did Glen.
As someone who grew up in Venda, Austin also watched Muvhango religiously. How surreal is it that decades later, he gets to photograph One of the drama’s stars Glen! The two’s worlds came together when Austin did a photo shoot for Kaya FM, where Glen works.
“Growing up in Venda, I never imagined where life would take me, but man God really outdid Himself with this journey.
The first time I saw this face was in 1997, flickering on our old TV in rural Tshiozwi. Muvhango had just hit SABC2. The first ever Tshivenda drama series brought to life by the legendary Duma Ka Ndlovu. Glen Lewis played Edward Mukwevho, son of Mashudu Mukwevho.
Fast forward to today and that same face is standing in front of my camera for a shoot with one of SA’s most iconic Afropolitan radio stations, Kaya FM.
