“We MUST Stand Together Against Femicide: A Call to Action for South African Men
As we navigate the heart-wrenching reality of femicide in our country, it is crucial to acknowledge that this crisis affects us all. It is with a heavy heart that I recognize that our own brothers ABO —Makhanya, Mthimkhulu, and Ngubane—are implicated in this grievous murder and selling of their own sisters. We cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that men, including those we know and love, are the perpetrators of violence against us.
We must confront this uncomfortable truth head-on. Femicide is not just a women’s issue; it is a societal issue that demands the active participation of men. As men, you have a responsibility to challenge the toxic norms and behaviors that perpetuate violence and discrimination against women.
It is time to speak out, to educate yourselves and your peers, and to foster a culture of respect and equality. You need to create safe spaces for women and stand in solidarity with us. This is not merely a call for awareness; it is a call for action.
We urge all South African men to join us in this fight. Let us stand together to denounce violence, to support survivors, and to hold each other accountable. We must work collectively to dismantle the patriarchal structures that allow such violence to persist.
Together, we can create a future where women feel safe and valued. This must stop. Participate in the change we wish to see in our communities,” she said.
