About the Job
Robben Island Museum (RIM) is inviting qualified female ex-political prisoners residing in the Western Cape to apply for a Research Assistant in the Heritage and Research Department. This 6-month fixed-term contract position forms part of the Women Imprisonment Project, which seeks to document and preserve the histories of women who were incarcerated for political reasons.
Remuneration: R7 332.63 per month (Total Cost to Company)
Responsibilities:
- Accompany researchers during life history interviews across South Africa.
- Attend compulsory training and workshops in Cape Town.
- Act as a Project Ambassador to explain RIM’s mandate and current heritage programmes to interviewees.
- Help identify eligible women ex-political prisoners (EPPs) for interviews in all nine provinces.
- Assist in creating a positive atmosphere during interviews and link EPPs or their families to researchers.
- Educate EPPs about RIM’s heritage work and other governmental support (e.g. Department of Military Veterans).
- Submit monthly reports and carry out duties promoting RIM in local communities.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be a female ex-political prisoner with a verifiable prison number.
- Must reside in the Western Cape.
- Must have completed Grade 12.
- Basic computer literacy.
- Excellent verbal communication and telephone manner.
- Fluent in English and at least two African languages.
- Willingness to travel for up to 4 weeks at a time.
