ShalliPopi’s Internet Scammer Past Resurfaces Amid Meteoric Rise of “Laho”

As “Laho” continues its chart-topping run across Africa, cementing itself as one of the biggest songs on the continent in 2025, its creator, Nigerian TikTok sensation ShalliPopi, finds himself thrust back into the spotlight for reasons that stretch far beyond music. Crown Uzama, known widely by his stage name ShalliPopi, is once again facing scrutiny over his controversial past—specifically, his 2023 arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged internet fraud.
In June 2023, EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren issued a statement confirming the arrest of ShalliPopi and his manager, Ajayi Hafeez (popularly known as 21 Badda), for alleged internet-related crimes. The arrests were part of a larger sting operation that targeted a gathering of suspected cybercriminals in Barnawa, Kaduna. Acting on actionable intelligence about a proposed show organized by alleged internet fraudsters, EFCC operatives swooped in on multiple locations—including Disney Park Lounge, Epitome, and Tomoso Hotels—leading to the arrest of 31 individuals in total.
“Items recovered include mobile phones, laptop computers and two vehicles. The suspects will be arraigned in court after the investigation,” Uwujaren stated.
At the time, the arrest generated headlines, but it was seen as just another entry in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against cybercrime. However, with the overwhelming success of “Laho”—a track that has become an anthem across clubs, social media, and airwaves in Nigeria and beyond—the spotlight has swung back to ShalliPopi’s criminal past.
Fans and critics alike are now divided. Some argue that the artist has paid his dues and deserves the right to move forward, especially if no conviction followed the arrest. Others question whether the industry’s embrace of figures with problematic histories sends the wrong message, particularly in a digital age where fraud-related content is glamorized by some influencers and entertainers.
Despite the controversy, ShalliPopi has remained silent, letting the numbers speak for him. “Laho” has garnered millions of streams and is reportedly being courted by international record labels and media platforms. Still, as his profile grows, so too does the curiosity—and concern—about the man behind the music.
Will ShalliPopi’s past derail his newfound fame, or will he rise above it and rewrite his story in full view of the world? For now, “Laho” plays on, but the beat of his controversial past lingers in the background.
