North West Man Steals Ambulance with Patient Inside

Ventersdorp residents woke up to a shocking and unusual crime on Friday, 27 December 2024, when police arrested a 24-year-old man in Tshing Location for the audacious theft of an ambulance.

The bizarre incident unfolded late Thursday night, 26 December, outside the local hospital. According to reports, Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) personnel were busy transferring a patient into an ambulance for transport to a neighboring hospital when the suspect seized the opportunity. At approximately 23:55, he jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off—with the patient still in the back.

Police were immediately alerted and wasted no time in responding. They quickly tracked the stolen ambulance to Tshing, Extension 5, and managed to stop the vehicle without incident. Thankfully, the patient remained unharmed throughout the ordeal, though undoubtedly shaken.

The 24-year-old suspect was arrested on the spot and is set to appear in the Ventersdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 30 December 2024, facing charges of motor vehicle theft.

Major General Patrick Asaneng, Acting North West Provincial Police Commissioner, praised the swift action of the officers involved, stating, “The recovery of the ambulance and the safety of the patient were our top priorities. I commend the team for their prompt and professional response to this incident.”

While the patient has since been safely transported to their intended hospital, the motive behind the crime remains unclear. Was it a reckless joyride or something more sinister?

Social media erupted with reactions, with many expressing outrage over the sheer audacity of the crime. Others were baffled, asking, “Why an ambulance?!”

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for heightened security, even in the most unexpected places. As investigations continue, one thing is clear—Ventersdorp won’t soon forget the night an ambulance became the target of theft.
