Thuso Mbedu Pays Moving Tribute to Her Late Cousin Who Died In A Horrific Car Accident. Losing a family member in that manner can never be easy. And we know that it took Thuso Mbedu a lot to pen her tribute.
She started sharing the beautiful memories they had as a family back on the 3rd of November 2023. The international award winning actress insisted on a gathering, since it takes time for her to see family members. By how Thuso narrated the events of the day, fun was had.
“The night of 3 November 2023 memories were relived and shared, given voice through laughter and tears of joy. No photos or videos were taken as they would impede on the natural flow of the catch up. That’s the one thing that sucks about living so far: you only see your family once in a while. And that’s why I insisted on connecting while I was back, citing “I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to see any of you again”, Thuso said.
Sadly the day ended tragically, with Thuso’s cousin losing her life in a car accident. Thuso couldn’t even bring herself to post about the loss, because she battled to accept. Only now that she can let all her feelings out publicly.
“I can still hear Lusanda’s laugh as she batted her long lashes while she relayed the story of why she decided to shaya ichiskop. It was met with mixed reviews by the table. I admired her bravery as I’d been longing for a clean shave for a very long time but thought I’d look weird with it. No one knew that under the head wrap that I wore at her funeral, nothing remained,” Thuo added.
“Most of the moments of the fourth of November do me a favor by evading me but there are others:
Driving to the hospital and getting stuck in some random traffic only to find that, as you drive past the cause of the traffic, you see the car your family members were in burnt to a crisp.
Finding that it’s protocol for the police and nurses to tell you that nothing’s wrong and that everyone’s fine: the info I conveyed to my cousin’s mom when I arrived at the hospital.
“Three people were brought in”. A relief- even through hearing pain-riddled the screams of my other cousin as they reverberated through the ER. Barely imperceptible, it was my sister who murmured that Lusanda was gone.”
Nothing remains now but the memories. And now, we’ll be looking out for Lusanda’s laugh when her father laughs. Actively listening out for the sound of her voice when her mother speaks. It will be in a smell, a touch, a sight – all welcome memories that remind us that our beloved was here giving us everything of herself.
Love always mzala 🤍
