Gayton McKenzie Wants Answers From His Department Over the Questionable Cost of His Paris Olympics Trip. Being a Minister is hectic, but Gayton McKenzie is taking it like a star. When he is asked for accountability, he produces receipts. Two days ago, he took to Twitter (X) explaining what he got up to while in Paris, France for the Olympics.
The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture stated that he attended six meetings in Paris before the start of the Olympics. He went to the athletic villa to greet our athletes, attended opening ceremony and watch the hockey, gymnastic and sevens game. McKenzie also opened Ekhaya village and watched the rest of the Olympic Games on TV.
Taking things a notch up, McKenzie has shared a breakdown cost of his Paris trip. He tweeted a letter he wrote to the department’s acting director-general, Cynthia Khumalo. The Minster demands answers from the department over a mind-boggling R800 000 Olympic excursion. What caught his attention on the breakdown cost was the R454 000 that went towards “ground transportation”. The figure is more than doubles the price of the flights, which were a mere R215 000.
McKenzie also questioned his hotel bill, which came in at R115 000. He stated that he did not want luxury for accommodation, ending up sleeping a a four star hotel. McKenzie urged Ms Khumalo to give answers ASAP, as he needs them for his upcoming press conference on Thursday.
“I demand transparency from others in @SportArtsCultur and I should do same, I shall go public with this answer,” McKenzie said.
