Loyiso Bala Reminisces On His First Meeting With PJ Powers and How Their Friendship Has Grown. The tow often perform together at major events around the country and internationally. PJ Powers and Loyiso Bala have both stood the test of time in the harsh music industry.
They met almost three decades ago, when 15 year-old, Loyiso was part of the Drakensburg Boys Choir. Talking about the experience, he shared that the choir was asked to sing the new National Anthem with the legendary PJ Powers. This was at the opening of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which South Africa won.
“I first met PJ “Thandeka” Powers in 1995 when I was about 15, and she was probably in her late-twenties. As a member of the Drakensberg Boys Choir, we were asked to sing the new national anthem with PJ at the opening of the ’95 Rugby World Cup. After a full day of rehearsals at the stadium, around 10 p.m., we got an unexpected call: we needed to record the old anthem because the Springboks hadn’t had time to learn the new one,” Loyiso said.
His encounter with PJ Powers did not end there. The musician, media personality and reality show star says PJ started taking of him. She grew fond of his voice, and passion for music. PJ then became his mentor, and to date they are still sharing the gate together.
“From that moment on, PJ started to take notice of me, growing fond of my voice and my passion for music. She became not only a mentor but a true supporter of my talent, always encouraging me to keep going. Now, nearly 30 years later, we’re still sharing the stage, and our bond—personally and musically—has only grown stronger,” he added.
