Back in 2021, the hit drama cast, Mxolisi Nodom, who was born deaf. Instead of the show casting an actor who knows how to sign, they went for an actual deaf person. Mxolisi made history as the first ever deaf actor on South African TV shows. He played Thando, Violetta (Cindy Mahlangu)’s deaf brother who was looking for his dead sister that she hasn’t heard from for a while.
Before his thrust into the limelight with the Scandal!, Mxolisi was involved with Zwakala, an art competition for the deaf. After learning about Scandal’s auditions, he sent a series of video clips to the showrunners since he was not in Johannesburg at the time. He was then called in for auditions and as they say, the rest was history.
