Tributes Pour In for the Late Former Boxing Champion Dingaan Thobela. Many people are waking up to the news of Dingaan Thobela’s passing. The former boxing world champion and darling of South African sports was found dead at his Mayfair, Johannesburg flat on Monday evening after battling illness. Thobela was 57 years old.
Nicknamed the “Rose of Soweto, the celebrated boxer from Chiawelo, Soweto, is one of the most decorated athletes to come out of the country. Among other achievements, he held three world titles in two-weight divisions – the first two being the WBO and WBA lightweight belts in the lightweight divisions and the WBC super middleweight belt, which he received in 2000.
The South African Government, Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture, Economic Freedom Fighters, are among the major organizations which has so far paid tribute to the fallen star. Minister Zizi Kodwa said Thobela was a champion fighter who captured the hearts and soul of the nation. He also mentioned some of the memorable fights that Thobela fought in, including the one against Tony Lopez to win the WBA Lightweight title.
