Jackie Phamotse Placed Under House Arrest. The Kumalos have been battling it out in court with Jackie Phamotse since 2018. Finally the verdict has been reached, and now both parties can continue with their lives going forward.
In September 2023, Jackie was found guilty of defaming Basetsana and her husband Romeo Kumalo. The case against Jackie stems from a series of tweets and statements she made on social media in 2018. The best selling author and now TV producer made allegations insinuating the existence of a compromising video involving the Kumalos and another male figure. The tweet trended, with social media user coming up with all sorts of theories. The accusations were not only damaging to Kumalo’s reputation, they also became subjected to social media trolls.
Basetsana, then took legal action against Jackie to clear her name and hold her accountable for spreading false and damaging information. The case took a whole five years and finally a verdict has been reached. After careful consideration of the evidence presented, the court ultimately ruled in favor of Basetsana. Jackie has been found guilty of defamation, and she has now been sentenced.
Jackie has been sentenced to house arrest for two years for her crimes and given a fine of R30,000 or 10 months in prison. The Randburg magistrate’s court also fined Phamotse R12 000 on count three or four months imprisonment. On count four, she was penalized R18 000 or six months imprisonment.
She will also have to do 16 hours of community service a month and participate in various programmes. In her judgement, Magistrate S Naidoo, found Jackie had shown no remorse but believed imprisonment would not be appropriate.
