Principal Accountabilities

  • Implementation of Health and Safety Management System for achievement and maintenance of required certification
  • To align OHS systems with Railway Safety Regulator Standards
  • To undertake compliance verification of Occupational Health and Safety systems as well as contractor safety systems
  • Review and present SHEQ Induction Training and other OHS awareness training to all BOC staff and subcontractor employees.
  • Manage on a day-to-day basis OHS Management System requirements to ensure creation and maintenance of highest levels of safety within all BOC controlled premises.
  • Interact with external parties so as to ensure that Gautrain’s Health and Safety Systems remain abreast with changes in the field of OHS.
  • Undertake incident and accident investigations as per BOC Incident Management Procedures
  • Ensure effective management of all incidents/accidents including follow up on all corrective and preventive actions.
  • Coordinate planned and ad-hoc inspections requested by various Authorities e.g. Fire Departments, DoL Inspectors, etc
  • Coordinate internal and external Health and Safety audits.
  • Effective management of all Health and Safety non- conformances raised in all audits and inspections undertaken by various Officials on the Gautrain System

Specific Responsibilities

  • Formulate and review occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Develop and implement programs to ensure compliance with all safety procedures.
  • Undertake safety awareness campaigns and instill a sense of safety consciousness among employees.
  • Undertake internal safety audits and coordinate all external safety audits.
  • Attend all SHE Committee Meetings and provide advice and guidance at these meetings so as to improve Health and Safety at BOC
  • Attend GMA/BCC PEC SHEQ Meetings and present BOC status of Health and Safety compliance.
  • Coordinate emergency drills as per the plans discussed and approved at EMS meetings.
  • Liaise with the relevant authorities and other organizations on safety and industrial/occupational health matters.
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by higher authority.
  • Conduct Health and Safety Inductions
  • Review and approval of the contractor Health and Safety Files
  • Participate in Health and Safety awareness campaigns

  • Possess analytical and critical ability (data interpretation, analysis of incident trends, etc)
  • Ability to communicate with staff at all levels (presentation skills, confidence, passionate about OHS through leading by example)
  • Ability to develop and present health and safety topics to all levels in the company (subject expect demonstrated by knowledge, confidence, and articulate in presentation)
  • Team player (approachable, available, strong link in the team)
  • Possess leadership quality

Background Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) and completed tertiary education (Degree/Diploma) in Safety Management, Environmental Health, or Occupational Health and Safety
  • General knowledge of relevant South African health and safety legislation, applicable SANS standards, Railway Safety legislation and associated OHS standards
  • Fluency in English
  • 3-5 years practical experience in the development, implementation and auditing of occupational health and safety management systems.

Added Advantage:

  • Knowledge of occupational hygiene practices, environmental management systems, risk management systems, fire safety, First Aid, and Facilitator/Moderator training.

Professional Registrations: 

Registration with at least one of the following professional bodies at any level:

  • IOSM, or
  • SAIOH or similar professional body,
