Oscar Pistorius A Free Man
Oscar Pistorius A Free Man. About two months ago, it was announced that Oscar Pistorius was granted parole. According to a statement issued by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Pistorius’ parole would be effective from the 5th January 2023. The decision was made after the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board assessed the former Paralympic star’s profile.
The day has finally arrived, and Pistorius is a free man. He has been released on parole from Pretoria’s Atteridgeville Correctional Centre after eight years behind bars for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
“The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is able to confirm that Oscar Pistorius is a parolee, effectively from 5 January 2024. He was admitted into the system of community corrections and is now at home,” statement by DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
Pistorius was initially convicted of culpable homicide by Gauteng High Court Judge Thokozile Masipa for repeatedly shooting Steenkamp through his toilet door on Valentine’s Day 2013. In his defense, Pistorius said he believed she, was an intruder.
He was initially jailed for five years in for culpable homicide by a high court. The supreme court of appeal in late 2015 found him guilty of murder after an appeal by prosecutors. Pistorius was sent back to jail for six years in 2016 after a high court sentence, but the following year, the supreme court more than doubled his murder sentence to 13 years and five months.
Back in March, Pistorius was denied parole after it was ruled that he had not completed the minimum detention period required to be considered for parole. This time around it is alleged that Reeva’s mother did not oppose his freedom bid.
