Matric Results: Check Out How Provinces Performed. On Thursday evening, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the National Senior Certificate matric results. The much anticipated results showed a historic pass rate of 82.9%, which was an increase from 80.1% in 2022 and 76.4% in 2021.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Matric results, has to be provincial performances. Many are always eager to know how their province did as opposed to others. This year, the Free State province led with an 89.0% pass rate, followed by KwaZulu Natal with 86.36%. Gauteng came third with 85.38%. There are significant improvements noted in Limpopo (7.4% increase) as well as the Eastern Cape (4.1% increase). The Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo produced a significant portion of Bachelor passes and distinctions.

Regarding District level performance, no district had a pass rate below 60%, with top districts exceeding 80%. Johannesburg West in Gauteng is leading with 92.5%.
Motshekga also named the top achievers of the class of 2023. Together with Deputy Minister, Dr Reginah Mhaule, they hosted a breakfast for the 2023 matric top achievers at the MTN Innovation Centre in Randburg, Johannesburg. The matriculants were told that their achievement was not a small feat, their success was described as an honour that they would carry for the rest of their lives.
