Toya Delazy Celebrates A Full Year of Sobriety

Toya Delazy Celebrates A Full Year of Sobriety. She has joined the growing number of local celebrities opting for a sober life. Toya Delazy is one year into this lifestyle, and she is doing very well.

The talented musician, who is based abroad, started drinking alcohol at the age of 17. She quickly got used to it, to an extend that she relied on alcohol to make her feel some type of way. Alcohol became her friend, and somewhat a solution to every problem.

I’m 1 year sober today, I started drinking later than most, had my first drink at 17 – I never forgot that feeling of numbness and power, and as problems came with life, the more I saw alcohol as a friend. Becoming an artist really exposed me to the hedonism I wanted after being in suffocating institutions, booze felt like the solution to everything, and I went in HARD even though I really was a light weight,” Toya said.

Being in the south African music scene made her dive deep into booze. The alcohol was free and the entire industry thrived on alcohol consumption. Toya also noticed that the higher the price the cooler the person felt. ,

I’m talking radio ads, music videos, clubbing, gigs, every single link up involved alcohol, and I fell hard for it. For a moment I forgot about all my problems, that I felt isolated, alone, misunderstood by those I loved the most, after a while there was no space left to hide these very intense emotions. Each time I drank, everything would escalate very quickly, there would come a time where I would leave my body and the spirit of pain would consume me, & I would become very sad, angry and eventually, suicidal,” she added.

Toya decided enough was enough in 2022. She found a community which supported her and a counselor. It wasn’t an easy transition though as now Toya had to deal with life sober. The first three months were tough, as she learned to do all the holidays, clubs and festivals sober. But looking beyond it all, Toya was motivated by what she was doing it for.

“….each time I looked at my daughter I knew she deserved a life free from the traumas I’d experience. I was gonna break the generational trauma. I wouldn’t be passing that down, she saved my life. Today is a year since I made that decision and I’m so proud of my willpower. I am Grateful to my wife for supporting me through that decision and journey, also long live the therapist ❤️ #sobriety,” she concluded her powerful message.
