This fixed-term position is designed for learners aiming to complete the Basic Pharmacist Assistant course and gain practical experience in a professional pharmacy environment. Role Overview
The Dispensary Support role focuses on providing assistance to pharmacists while learning key aspects of dispensing, stock management, and patient support. The position emphasizes quality on-the-job learning, accuracy in medication handling, and adherence to legal and professional standards. Candidates will develop practical knowledge in pharmaceutical operations and patient service under the guidance of experienced pharmacists.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines under direct pharmacist supervision.
- Support the compounding and preparation of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and SOPs.
- Help with unpacking, merchandising, and maintaining dispensary and OTC shelves.
- Learn to interpret prescriptions accurately, ensuring compliance with SAPC standards.
- Assist with picking, packing, labeling, and checking medication for accuracy, with pharmacist oversight.
- Support stock control, including checking expiry dates and maintaining organized shelves.
- Follow up on prescription tracking and patient appointments as directed by the dispensary manager.
- Assist with scheme authorizations for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication.
- Respond to call center scripts and patient service queries.
- Report stock shortages, errors, or discrepancies to the dispensary manager.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / Senior Certificate with at least 50% in Pure Mathematics and Life or Physical Sciences, with an overall average of 50% or higher.
- Must pass the proficiency test required for SAPC registration as a learner basic assistant.
- South African citizen with a clear criminal and credit record.
- Strong English and second language skills (reading, writing, and speaking).
- Time management, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure.
- Good communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and professional conduct.
- Basic computer and numerical skills.
Advantageous Skills
- Previous retail or FMCG experience, preferably at Dis-Chem.
- Knowledge of drugs, family planning, and complementary medicine.
- Familiarity with Unisolv, SAP, and e-Scripting systems.
