SA Celebs Join the World to Mourn Tina Turner. She was undoubtedly one of the biggest pop artists in the entire world. Known as the”Queen of Rock ‘n’ Rol, Tina Turner rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue before launching a successful career as a solo performer
Sadly the music legend and icon of this lifetime, has passed away at the age of 83 years-old. According to the family spokesperson, Turner met her peaceful demise at her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland after suffering illness for a long time.
Turner was also well known here in South Africa, and has once performed on our shores. In Apr 16, 1996, aged 56, she kicked off her massive “Wildest Dreams” world tour in Cape Town. Before then she rehearsed in the country since early March, and wooed more than 30,000 fans with a selection of some of her most famous hits and material from her album, “Wildest Dreams”.
She performed four concerts in South Africa in total, being Cape Town, Durban and two in Johannesburg.
Driving rain wasn’t enough to deter more than 25,000 people from attending Turner’s Durban concert.
Speaking after her Cape Town concert, Turner said she felt great and enjoyed the reaction of South African audiences who’ve given her a rapturous welcome.
It goes without saying that as the world mourns Turner South Africans will also pay tribute to the legend. Celebrities like Thando Thabethe, Anele Mdoda, Thembisa Nxumalo and Masechaba Khumalo are among the many South Africans mourning with the world.
