Azana on How Driving Around Alex Inspired Uhuru
Azana on How Driving Around Alex Inspired Uhuru. She is currently one of the hottest musicians making waves in the country. At only 23 ears of age, Makhosazana Azana Masango has captured millions of people with her outstanding voice.
The talented musician released her debut studio album in 2020, and it did very well. Ingoma debuted number one in South Africa and its lead single “Your Love” was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA).
She also has a hit song, Uhuru, with versatile musician, Sun-El Musician. The song is off Sun-El Musician’s debut studio album titled, To The World And Beyond Album, and it is listed as the 6th track in the album. Both Sun-El (Sanele Sithole), are making good vibes in the South African Music Industry, hence why their song together is such a hit.
Behind every song, there is a story and Uhuru is no exception. Azana, was recently on an interview on The Episode podcast, where she unpacked the story behind the hit song. She said the song came about from a conversation they were having while driving around Alexandra, which is the biggest township in the country. She felt it was not fair that people in Alex lived under such conditions.
Azana does not see any kind of change in the lives of many black people, despite having gained freedom in 1994. As the conversation continued, the creative Azana took a pen and paper and began writing. When they got to the studio it was only a matter of creating a bit, and the rest was history. The song was also inspired by Letta Mbulu’s song, Not Yet Uhuru, which talks about us still being in the same place.
