Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng Receives Love After Reports That She Is Leaving UCT. Encouraging messages of support are all over social media for Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng. This is after reports that she is leaving her job as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town.
According to News24, Professor Phakeng will take an early retirement package from UCT. This comes after the embattled vice-chancellor and university council reached an exit settlement deal, according to an exclusive report by the publication. The article stated that Phakeng will be paid over R12 million to leave the university before her second term expires in 2028.
No one can take away the fact that Phakeng has done a great job during her tenure as Vice-Chancelloer. About four months ago, she won the inaugural Africa Education Medal, which recognizes the work of changemakers who transform education on the continent. As much as Phakeng constantly gets awards for the role she plays as an educator, she has faced some hectic criticism along the way.
When she announced a couple of moths ago that she was taking a much needed 5 months sabbatical leave, Professor Phakeng was criticized by some. One of those not happy was active Twitter user, Richard Wilkinson. In his bio, he identifies himself as an anti-woke, anti-tax activist fighting school capture in South Africa. Richard said it was unacceptable, because of what he refers to as the horrific revelations contained in an article on Daily Maverick. He added that Phakeng should immediately go.
Well, it looks like the pressure has gotten too much, and Phakeng is now leaving the institute. As everyone is waiting for her response, she took to Twitter with a video thanking everyone who has been supportive. Phakeng has also dismissed the News24 article as Hogwash.
Amidst all of this, she is getting all the support she needs from many social media users. Some even want her as the Minister of Higher Education, considering ow passionate she is.
