Bongani Pays Tribute to His Late Mom Brenda Fassie on Her Birthday

Bongani Pays Tribute to His Late Mom Brenda Fassie on Her Birthday. On this day 58 years ago, a legend was born. Although it has been 18 years since we lost Brenda Fassie, she is still remembered as one of the most iconic stars we have ever had in the country and Africa at large.

On the morning of 26 April 2004, Brenda collapsed at her home in Buccleuch, Gauteng, and was admitted into a hospital in Sunninghill. The press was told that she had suffered cardiac arrest, but later reported that she had slipped into a coma brought on by an asthma attack. The post-mortem report revealed that she had taken an overdose of cocaine on the night of her collapse, and this was the cause of her coma. She stopped breathing and suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen, and died aged 39 on 9 May 2004 in hospital without regaining consciousness after her life support machines were turned off.

Brenda was survived by her siblings as well as her only child, Bongani Fassie. Just like his late mother Bongani ventured into music, and sadly he also got hooked into drugs. From 5 June 2021 the talented musician and producer opened up about his life in his reality show Finding Bongani which recently wrapped its 2nd season. Drug and alcohol abuse, suicide attempts, family disputes, his mother’s legacy, inheritance, marriage, love, toxic friendships are some of the issues he has addressed so far.

When it comes to cashing in on his mother’s legacy, Bongani has always had problems. When he wanted to do a doccie-film in honor of her late mother,  Chicco Sello Twala, wasn’t supportive. The songwriter and producer claimed that he has all the rights to Brenda’s music, which he produced and wrote. He said he was taking legal action to stop the release of any film made about her life.

It seems like things are now looking up for Bongani with regards to his mother’s legacy. He has been promising his followers on social media that on this day, he is going to drop his long anticipated music. True to his word, Bongani announced that the entire Brenda catalogue is now available on digital.
