Basetsana Kumalo Throws Us Back to Miss World 1994 Pageant
Basetsana Kumalo Throws Us Back to Miss World 1994 Pageant. The 44th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 19 November 1994. The prestigious event marked the third consecutive staging of Miss World in Sun City. 87 contestants from around the world competed for the title including the then Miss South Africa, Basetsana Kumalo, nee Makgalemele.
The TV mogul, businesswoman, author and former beauty queen finished in a top position of first runner-up. This was a very proud and historic moment for South Africa in so many ways. The year 1994 also marked the country’s first democratic elections. At the pageant, Irene Esther Ferreira Izquierdo from Venezuela was crowned the second princess, while India’s Aishwarya Rai walked away with the crown.
28 years later, Basetsana, who is still big on beauty pageants, can’t help but still celebrate the experience. She took to social media to reflect on the year when she was crowned both Miss South Africa and Miss World 1st runner up.
“In 1994 Basetsana Kumalo was crowned Miss South Africa and 1st runner up at @missworld
