Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng Claps Back After Being Judged for Taking a 5Month Leave
Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng Claps Back After Being Judged for Taking a 5Month Leave. Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng has been doing amazing things since being the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town. Just recently she won the inaugural Africa Education Medal, which recognizes the work of changemakers who transform education on the continent.
A few weeks back, she announced that she was taking a much needed 5month break from work. The professor stated that she was hoping to refresh, reflect and recharge as she prepare to start her 2nd term as Vice Chancellor in July next year.
A lot of those who commented wished the professor well as she took on this sabbatical leave. Clearly this did not sit well with a couple of people. Some of those people responded that this was such an embarrassment, since the University of Cape Town, continues its decline under Phakeng’s leadership.
One of those not happy is active Twitter user, Richard Wilkinson. In his bio, he identifies himself as an anti-woke, anti-tax activist fighting school capture in South Africa. Richard is not impressed with the 5months sabbatical leave, saying it is unacceptable. This according to him, is because of what he refers to as the horrific revelations contained in today’s Daily Maverick article
“A five month sabbatical? Five months?!?! UCT is paying you a salary to post videos of you dancing in your garden? I’m sorry – but this is unacceptable, especially in light of the horrific revelations contained in today’s Daily Maverick article. Please go – and go now,” Richard said.
Since he included Phakeng’s dancing in his shade, the professor came back with a lethal clap back. She uploaded another video of herself dancing, rocking her Sepedi tradition outfit. Captioning the video she said,“That’s nothing Richard, check this out,” ouch!
