Local Musician Catches the Attention of John Legend After this Cool Duet. Quite a number of entertainers made it big in the industry by putting themselves out there. One can think of Uncle Waffles, who is now an international sensation after her video went viral online.
Another South African artist could be next in line following his African-inspired verse on John Legendβs new song titled Nervous. Although Mthandazo Gatya is already an established musician, his latest duet with the American superstar will definitely take him to even greater heights.
John has just released his eighth studio album, titled Legend. Nervous is one of the tracks on the album, and is taking the industry by storm. John then invited fans to βduetβ his video on TikTok, and our very own Gatya participated in the #OpenVerseChallenge. The coolest thing about how he went on about the challenge was singing in Zulu.
This saw the likes of Khanyi Mbau, Toya Delazy, Sol Phenduka and so many celebs commend Gatya on his talent. Not only did his verse blow South Africans away but also caught the attention of the American singer-songwriter. Legend also retweeted the duet, and we can only be hopeful for great things to come Gatya’s way.
“Thank you all for make sure John Legend sees my duet, great news is that he loved it and replied, as to what will happen next, we can leave that to God, thank you from the bottom of my hear,” he said in excitement.
Gatya’s breakthrough in music came in 2020, after he released the song Senzeni. Things started coming together for him since he met Jozi Entertainment boss Lebo Mlangeni who loved the music and he helped to turn my life around.
Before meeting Lebo, Gatya was on the verge of losing his shack after hosting an unsuccessful music event and landed up in debt.
βI was owing a lot of money to people, and my life was in danger. I needed to find a way to pay the money, or I would lose my life and I had to give up the shack in order to pay the debt, not knowing that losing the shack meant that God was opening doors for something much bigger.
“And that is when my career took off,β he says. He shot his music video for the song Senzeni at the shack he used to live in.
