South African National Taxi Council Distances Itself From the Planned National Shutdown. There is another national shut down planned for this week. This national shutdown has been earmarked for Wednesday across South Africa.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said it will be marching to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) demanding a sustainable rail service to workers. The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) Saftu is also one of many organizations planning demonstrations against the rising cost of living set for Wednesday.
Organizers’ demands include a R1 500 basic income grant, the de-escalation of the interest rates, fuel, electricity, and food costs, an end to the privatization of government institutions, as well as an end to wage cuts and below-inflation wage increases in the private and public sector.
Demonstrations on Wednesday will include a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, a march to the Parliament in the Western Cape, a march to the Free State Premier’s office in Mangaung, and a march to Eskom Park in Witbank, Mpumalanga.
One organization refusing to take part in all of this is the South African National Taxi Council. The organization states that even though they others reached out to them, they would not participator on the planned national shut down.
