This Is the Subject Mmusi Maimane Feels Should Be Scrapped Off the Syllabus. Every student has their favorite subject at school. The main reason for picking a particular subject as your favorite, is because you find it easy and excel on it. But will that subject take you anywhere in terms of future career?

As we speak a number of social media are weighing on the value of some subjects in the long run. This came after former Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane said Life Orientation should be taken off the syllabus. He says the subject should be replaced with Critical Thinking and Critical communications.

“We must scrap Life Orientation as a subject…..A subject that is fully examinable and has only 25% school based assessments. As things stand many Universities do not even fully recognize LO as a subject and they discount it for APS scores.” Maimane said.

“LO is taught for 2 hours a week and 80 hours in total a year. 35% of that time is allocated to Physical education. Only 5% of that time is allocated to study skills and they are taught in term two of the school year. This shows why our students are not developing study skills,” Maimane added.

Maimane is never the shy one, when it comes to sharing his views on education. Back in 2020, he condemned the opening of the schools during Covid-19 pandemic. Maimane launched an online petition in which parents, guardians and the nation at large could sign against sending children back to school.

Recently Maimane expressed his concerns over the delay of the release of the 2022 Matric result. He also made news after saying one should only get a matric certificate if they pass 6 subjects with 50% or more. He feels a 30% mark undermines the intellect of learners.
