Thuso Mbedu Makes History With Her Recent International Award Win
Thuso Mbedu Makes History With Her Recent International Award Win. Talk about consistency! Thuso Mbedu has been bagging award after award, and she is not about to stop anytime soon. Just last year (2021) our golden girl took home major awards such as the TV Breakout Star Award at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards, as well as the Outstanding Performance in a New Series at the Gotham Awards 2021.
Continuing where she left in 2021, the multi award winning actress, has bagged yet another international award. Thuso has been crowned the Best Female Performance in a New Scripted Series award at the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards. This is for her lead role as Cora in ‘The Underground Railroad‘. This is a major accomplishment for Thuso as she became the first female to win best leads in TV series.
For the award, Thuso beat out Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts), Jana Schmieding (Rutherford Falls), Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting) and Deborah Ayorinde (THEM: Covenant).
“What a day! (I think I’ll need to take a nap for 3-5 business days to fully wrap my head around today). A big thank you to @filmindependent for allowing me to be part of such an important and brilliant group of people. I’m humbled. Thank you for this recognition,” Thuso gushed over her accomplishment.
She also thanked her family at The Underground Railroad, being Colson Whitehead, Barry Jenkins and Amazon Studios. “Thank you to everyone involved in creating this timeless work of art.
I have a lot more people to thank – and I will – but right now I just need to let this sink in. I appreciate y’all.”
