First and foremost, the Bathu founder and CEO has started a business that has created a lot of sustainable jobs. The shoe brand was created after Theo found that people in his hood, Alexandra Township, loved looking good, but couldn’t afford certain labels. After struggling at first to get investors, Theo’s perseverance has paid off and he now has over 25 stores across South Africa.
Among other things, Theo keep son making his mark as a renowned businessman. He has bagged award such as Retailer of the Year and Best New Store at the Canal Walk Retail Excellence Awards. He also recently got recognized as one of the 2021 Most Influential 100 Young Africans by Avance Media. Theo also gives back a lot, and in June 2021 he announced the CSI project Bathu for Batho care project, which aims at donating 1 000 000 pairs over the next 10 years.
The employees are well taken care of as well. Theo has made sure that his staff has transportation, which makes it easier for them to commute to and from work. This idea came about after Theo saw a lot of people who work after hours hitch hike for work, and he made it a vow to help his employees with transport one day. The good thing is that some of them have even saved enough to get their own cars. Talk about a healthy and progressive working environment.
“I used to see a lot of people who work until late hitch hike for transport. When I started Bathu ,I personally made a commitment to help our employees with transport. It is heart-warming to see some of our people who used to commute with the staff bus now buying cars,” Theo said.
