I am Determined to Serve our Country Proudly the Best Way I Can,” Lalela Mswane as She Takes on Miss Universe. These are words of a young lady who is focused on a particular goal. Despite all the backlash that Lalela Mswane has been receiving in the past couple of weeks, she is determined to do all she can representing South Africa in Miss Universe pageant.

Lalela, who was crowned Miss South Africa mid October, automatically qualified to represent South Africa at the Miss Universe pageant. She was a fan favorite at the beauty contest, and during her crowning congratulatory messages were galore. Her star however, was dimmed as it was revealed that the Miss Universe pageant was going to be held in Israel. Lalela did not pull out of the competition, despite being alerted of the cruel treatment of Palestinians at the hands of the apartheid Israel regime.

As we speak, Lalela is in Israel, ready to take on the world stage. Before her departure, she released a statement where she expressed her gratitude over representing South Africa at the 70th Miss Universe competition.

Being Miss South Africa is not only an honour but also a huge responsibility and I am determined to serve our country proudly in the best way that I can.

Beyond being granted a national platform during my reign to have a wider reach when tackling the economic and social issues which I have committed myself to, the title also comes with the opportunity to represent our country on an international platform along with women from all walks of life, all coming together to affect positive change in the causes they are passionate about and advocate for,” Lalela said.

She also expressed her gratitude to those who stood by her, “I am deeply thankful to all the amazing people who have supported and uplifted me and brought me joy and comfort during the lead up to this moment. I wish to compete with the support of South Africans and do my country proud.
