Mihlali Ndamase on The Downside of Being a Content Creator. We live in a digital world, hence a lot of people are finding ways to make a living using technology. Content creation is one of the most lucrative ways to make money. Young people across the globe have YouTube channels, blogs as well as other online platforms where they share creative content.
There are a lot of success stories when it comes to making it big as content creator. Locally we have the likes of Mihlali Ndamase, Lasizwe Dambusa, Moshe Ndiki, MacG, Kay Yarms and a whole lot more who are celebrities of note thanks to their YouTube channels. Looking at it from outside, the career looks like its all glitz and glam, but just like any other career, it has its challenges.
Mihlali, who has had her YouTube channel since 2016, is among those content creators, who young people aspire to be. The multi-award winning content creator has a beauty, lifestyle and travel YouTube channel that has over 350K subscribers. Through out her career Mihlali has made a number of publications such as gracing the first selfie cover on Cosmopolitan Magazine, the cover of Hello Joburg Magazine and the beauty issue of Ayana Magazine.
Mihlali has also been bagging some campaign deals during her career among them being the Ambassador and Face of the Johnsons & Johnsons Fresh Hydration range and First South African Face of Daniel Wellington. She also bagged her first television show alongside the legendary Somizi Mhlongo when she hosted the Buyel’Ekhaya Music festival. Mihlali also made her debut as an actress a few months ago on Rhythm City. All of these opportunities came by because of her content creation.
She however took to Twitter to share some of the challenges they face in the industry. Mihlali pointed out that they need a support group just to take care of their mental health. According to her, the job takes too much, and nothing is said about that.
“We need some sort of support group for content creators in this country, a safe space for our mental health and overall well-being. This job takes so much from you, and not a lot of people speak about that,” Mihlali said.
