“My People Are In Trouble,” Amanda du-Pont Ask The World To Help eSwatini
“My People Are In Trouble,” Amanda du-Pont Ask The World To Help eSwatini. On June 20 young people in eSwatini took to the streets in a push for the right to democratically elect the prime minister, currently appointed by King Mswati III. The protests then turned violent, and it is alleged that at least 21 people have already been killed by armed army personnel.
A video of King Mswati III’s children in which they mocked people for asking for democracy circulated on social media. The internet was shut down in the country, possibly to lock the outside world from knowing what is really going on. There are also rumors that electricity might be cut off in a few days. Acting Prime Minster Themba Masuku on Tuesday announced a 6pm to 5am curfew which he said was meant to minimize unnecessary movement to ensure the safety and security of eSwatini’s people. All of these are among the incidents that made citizens quite angry.
Amanda du-Pont, who hails from eSwatini is among those celebrities who are not happy about the state of affairs in the neighboring country. The talented actress, media personality and entrepreneur took to Instagram asking her followers to spread the word about what is happening in eSwatini. Amanda explained that she has been silent because she fears for the lives of her family members who are back home.
Among the things that Amanda is not happy about include the shooting of civilians, the recent curfew hours where everyone has to be home between 6pm and 5am as well as the shutting down of the internet. She regards what is happening in eSwatini as a crime against humanity.
“??My people are in trouble and their lives at risk as we speak! Please I need your help to spread the word. I have been silent in fear of my family’s lives who are in eSwatini, that they might be targeted. This is a revolution and we as the youth and promise of tomorrow stand up against an absolute monarchy! The king is having unarmed civilians shot who are caught in the streets, ridiculous curfew has been implemented at 6pm and human rights violated by shutting down the internet so the rest of the world doesn’t hear of the news. There are threats of shutting electricity. What is happening is a crime against humanity. The people are fighting for a multi party democracy and basic human rights taken away by monarchy. Majority of our country is poverty stricken and has had enough of the repressive government,” Amanda said.
