Masasa Mbangeni Mourns A Childhood Friend Who Is A Gender Based Violence Victim
Masasa Mbangeni Mourns A Childhood Friend Who Is A Gender Based Violence Victim. In June 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that gender-based violence in South Africa should be considered as a second pandemic in the country which is as serious as the coronavirus. During his address to the nation on that evening, Ramaphosa named the women and children who were raped and murdered in South Africa in the past two weeks. He is not the only public figure who speaks out against gender based violence. We have other personalities like Sello Maake KaNcube, Penny Lebyane, Ntsiki Mazwai, and many others who are bold enough to stand up for victims.
Masasa Mbangeni, is also another personality who ever mince her words when it comes to such issues. The award winning actress, is also a victim of gender based violence. There was a time when one of her colleagues slammed her against the wall and struck his tongue down her throat before a performance. Masasa is among the local artists who are part of the BODY OF EVIDENCE movement. The movement uses the arts as its communication platform, and aims to shock South Africans into realizing the magnitude and violent nature of GBV+F. It goes without saying that it is not always easy to stand against abuse, as perpetrators tend to identify you as an enemy.
As a person who speaks out against issues of GBV, Masasa can attest to that. According to her, there are some people who say she has no right to comment on gender based violence issues. Just like everybody else, she also knows someone who is a victim on GBV. A few days ago, her childhood friend was gunned down by her husband, and the perpetrator is still on the run.
