“That Train Has Left The Station,” Sol Phenduka On The Possibility of Going Back To Radio
“That Train Has Left The Station,” Sol Phenduka On The Possibility of Going Back To Radio. When you pursue a career in the entertainment industry, you need to be as versatile as you can. The industry is so brutal, hence putting your eggs in one basket is not ideal. A versatile person can easily try another medium should anything happen to their current job. That is why you find that a lot of media personalities are doing radio, TV, acting, music and YouTube all at the same time.
Because of the uncertainty of the industry, we have seen a lot of people, some massively talented, being let go. One such individual is Sol Phenduka. The talented radio personality and musician burst into the scene when he joined Yfm as an intern through the Y academy internship program. After the 6-month program, he joined “Flava In Da Mornin” breakfast show as a co-host to media personality, Mo flava in 2010.
Sadly Sol is no longer on radio and his listeners miss him. At least he recently made a comeback in the scene, as a Co-Host of the much talked about Podcast and Chill. He works with the equally controversial Mac G and The Ghost Lady, bringing fire content on YouTube every Monday at 3 o’clock. Sol is gaining back his popularity, and many of his fans are impressed by his talents and take on treading news. One Chiller, pointed out that Sol is underrated and could be one of the best contributors or co hosts for a Morning or drive time slots on radio.
Well, at the moment, Sol is quite content where he is. He is enjoying the freedom of speech that comes with podcasting, where they live by their own rules. As for going back to radio, Sol, said the offer would have to be super amazing for him to consider taking it.
“Agree with you, however, That train has left the station. Here on podcasting we do shit by our own rules, how we like. Also when shit hits the fan, there isn’t a program manager who is ready to drop the second shit get a too hot. The offer would have to be super amazing,” Sol said.
His journey on radio hasn’t always been rosy. Sol remained on the YFM breakfast show for four years till February 2014. Upon his return from Big Brother Mzansi 3, he left YFM and joined 5FM on its new breakfast show “Fresh at 5” with DJ Fresh.
Sadly his talent couldn’t save him from being suspended by 5FM for 3 days in January 2015 leading to the cancellation of the show “Fresh or Vrot”This was because of his inappropriate comments in the air nationwide of a 16-year-old axe attack victim survivor of the van Breda family, who were hacked to death in Stellenbosch. Sol said on air that she is “gorgeous” and he would “like to axe her out,” but that he “woundt make her an X “.
In October 2016, after 3 years at 5fm on the breakfast show and going on to getting his own show, due to his growing popularity with listeners, Sol resigned from 5FM with immediate to focus on other projects and his personal life.
