Applications Open for the Nelson Mandela Foundation Internship Programme 2022. Applications are invited from unemployed South African youth between 18-30 years of age, with relevant Degree / National Diploma qualifications. Successful interns will be expected to enter a 12-month contract. Interns will receive a monthly stipend.

1. Communications, Marketing & PR Responsibilities:

  • Produce creative communications content that can be packaged to suit different needs within the organization. This includes pitching, writing, and documenting stories for our social media handles, websites, and newsletter. This may be written, photographic, videobased, curatorial, or otherwise.
  • Assisting creating marketing campaigns to support the Foundation’s programmes and initiatives.
  • Research on thematic areas of our work as well as digital and social media trend analysis. This includes news monitoring and social listening.
  • General administration in support of the department’s goals.

Eligibility

  • Hold a qualification in communications or journalism and or relevant writing or communications experience in the NGO sector, media, or marketing (or a related qualification that you are able to motivate relates to the work of the communications programme at NMF).
  • Be recently graduated with little or no prior full-time work experience – preference will be given to applicants who have not previously benefited from an internship opportunity within a South African NGO.
  • Demonstrate strong journalism and creative writing skills
  • Be able to plan, prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word & Excel, Facebook, website design, Instagram, Twitter, Google apps).
  • Show a demonstrated ability to multi-task and ability to prioritize across multiple projects and social media platforms.
  • Ability to write for public consumption.
  • Must be willing and able to work in teams and be a self-starter.

2. Production & Editing 

  • Hold a qualification in videography and editing and or relevant production experience in the creative industry, media or otherwise (or a related qualification that you are able to motivate relates to the work of the communications programme at NMF).
  • Demonstrate competent to advanced photo and video editing software skills (e.g., Photoshop, InDesign, iMovie, Adobe etc.)
  • Be recently graduated with little or no prior full-time work experience – preference will be given to applicants who have not previously benefited from an internship opportunity within a South African NGO.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Be able to plan, prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word & Excel, Facebook, website design, Instagram, Twitter, Google apps).
  • Show a demonstrated ability to multi-task and ability to prioritize across multiple projects and social media platforms.
  • Ability to write for public consumption.

3. Archives & Research Roles & Responsibilities

  • Accessioning, processing, sorting, and maintaining physical and digital archival materials according to archival standards.
  • Updating and standardizing metadata relating to NMF collections.
  • Assisting in the implementation of various special projects, including digitization, publication development, and exhibition preparation, as required.
  • Responding and assisting researchers who consult the archive.
  • Assisting with exhibition tours on occasion.
  • Participating and assisting with various NMF activities as required by all staff members

Eligibility

  • Hold a qualification in information studies, history, or heritage management (or a related qualification that you are able to motivate relates to the work of the archival programme at NMF).
  • Be recently graduated with no prior full-time work experience – preference will be given to applicants who have not previously benefited from an internship opportunity within a South African NGO.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Have some experience of working with archival collections, and an understanding of the need for careful handling of archival material and artifacts – preferable.
  • Be able to plan, prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Be competent in Microsoft Office software.
  • Be fit and able to lift archive boxes and move loaded carts.

4. CEO’s Office Roles & Responsibilities

  • Prepare and disseminate correspondence, memos, and forms.
  • File and update contact information of employees – HR and external partners.
  • Support and facilitate the completion of regular reports – (Follow up on reviewed/ signed minutes)
  • Document expenses and hand in reports – (reconciliations).
  • Drafting minutes and following up on action items for the IP &Governance as well as EXCO.
  • May be requested to assist receptionist.

Eligibility

  • Hold a qualification in BA or BA Law or final year student (or a related qualification that you are able to motivate relates to the work of CEO’s office at the NMF).
  • Be recently graduated with no prior full-time work experience – preference will be given to applicants who have not previously benefited from an internship opportunity within a South African NGO.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Be able to plan, prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Be competent in Microsoft Office software.
  • Diligent in file management, conversion of documents from hard copy to soft copy.
  • Bee pro-active, flexible, and service minded.
  • Have a strong eye for detail and a sense of quality.
  • Always demonstrate a high level of confidentiality and discernment

5. Finance & Procurement Roles & Responsibilities

  • Shadowing members of the finance department as they perform their duties.
  • Assisting with research, filling, data entry and recording and maintaining accurate and complete financial records.
  • Working on SAP.
  • Taking on additional tasks or projects to learn more about accounting and office operations.
  • May be requested to assist receptionist.

Eligibility

  • In order to be eligible for the position, candidates should meet the following requirements.
  • Hold a qualification in 3-year B. Degree/ Diploma or equivalent in Accounting/Finance related disciplines.
  • Administrative Skills.
  • Communication – ability to communicate with all types of people at different levels.
  • Computer Literacy: Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to carry out instructions effectively.
  • Have verbal and written communication skills

6. Mandela Day & Outreach Roles & Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Mandela Day and Outreach team with logistics and planning for all departmental events/ activations and workshops.
  • Provide support for planning and coordination of travel logistics.
  • Taking meeting minutes of meetings and contributing to departmental/ donor reports.
  • Assist with research on key focus areas for the Mandela Day and Outreach Programme.
  • Support stakeholder relations for the department.
  • Work closely with other departments to align activities and ensure that departmental plans are shared on time with relevant the department(s).
  • Capture and collate data from various sources.
  • Work will be related to, but not limited to, the focus area of Food and Nutrition in South Africa, regionally and internationally.

Eligibility

  • Hold a qualification in Social Science or Commerce or currently studying towards.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Be able to plan, prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Be competent in Microsoft Office software.
  • Needs to be proficient in English and at least one other South African language

Note: Only Graduates or part-time students who have not previously taken part in any internship  programme are invited to apply.
