Julius Malema On How The Justice System Failed His Family After His 15 Year Old Niece Was Raped

Julius Malema On How The Justice System Failed His Family After His 15 Year Old Niece Was Raped. South Africa is leading in Africa with the most rape cases. It is estimated that over 40% of women here will be raped in their lifetime and that only 1 in 9 rapes are reported. It is also estimated that 14% of perpetrators of rape are convicted.

Julius Malema who is big on family is also among the people affected by rape. The EFF leader took to Twitter to open up about the tragedy that his family recently experienced. His 15 year old niece was raped, and unfortunately the alleged perpetrator is roaming the streets as a free man.

Malema had to help the police arrest the suspect, after they couldn’t in him down for two nights. According to Malema, the suspect was then releases on warning by a prosecutor.

Yesterday I helped the lazy Seshego police to arrest a suspect who raped my sister’s 15-year-old daughter after they failed to do so for two nights. What shocked me this morning is that the suspect was released on warning by a prosecutor and an officer, on the same day,” Malema said.

The family will take the matter further by opening a case of defeating the ends of justice against the prosecutor and the officer. “….what they did is not within the law. Rape doesn’t fall under schedule 7 of the criminal procedure act which authorizes such a procedure,”Malema added.
