Kalushi Lead Actor Thabo Rametsi Receives An International Award. Congratulations are in order for actor Thabo Rametsi who has won the Best Actor award at the Khouribga Film Festival in Morocco.
The grateful actor said, “Thank you to the Film Festival of Khouribga in Morocco for awarding us best actor for Kalushi last night. Now for Montreal, Canada.” When congratulating him, Minister Nathi Mthethwa had this to say, “Congratulations to Kalushi Movie lead Actor Thabo Rametsi for winning the Best Actor award at the Khouribga Film Festival in Morocco.
Kalushi is a true story about a nineteen-year-old hawker, Solomon Mahlangu (played by Thabo Rametsi) from Mmamelodi. He is brutally beaten by police and goes into exile following the 1976 Soweto uprisings to join the liberation movement. He returns from military training in Angola en route to their mission, his friend and comrade, Mondi, loses control and shoots two innocent people.
Mondi is severely beaten & tortured and Kalushi is forced to stand trial under the common purpose doctrine. The state seeks the highest punishment from the court, death by hanging. His sacrifice immortalizes him into a hero of the struggle and an international icon of June 16, 1976. This award-winning movie was broadcasted yesterday September 17th on SABC 1.
