Programme Purpose
The programme aims to prepare learners for registration as learner basic pharmacist assistants with the SAPC. Participants will gain practical workplace exposure while studying pharmaceutical procedures and pharmacy operations. The training focuses on dispensing support, stock management, customer service and healthcare administration.

Key Responsibilities

Dispensing Support

  • Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines under pharmacist supervision
  • Support compounding and preparation of non-sterile medicines
  • Assist with accurate medication picking, packing and labelling
  • Learn script interpretation and dispensing procedures
  • Ensure medications are checked and signed off by a pharmacist

Stock and Merchandising

  • Assist with unpacking and merchandising pharmacy stock
  • Monitor medicine expiry dates and shelf organisation
  • Maintain cleanliness of dispensary and OTC shelves
  • Report low stock levels and stock errors to management
  • Receive dispensary stock according to company procedures

Patient Service and Administration

  • Follow up with patients regarding prescriptions and appointments
  • Assist with patient service calls and call centre scripts
  • Support chronic, HIV, AIDS and oncology medication authorisations
  • Provide health-related information to customers where appropriate
  • Assist with pharmacy administrative duties

Compliance and Learning

  • Work within legal requirements set by the SAPC
  • Follow pharmacy standard operating procedures
  • Complete pharmacy training and proficiency requirements
  • Support professional pharmacy operations at all times

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate is essential
  • Pure Mathematics minimum 50%
  • Life Science and/or Physical Science required
  • Minimum average of 50% in required subjects

Legal and Employment Requirements

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Clear criminal and credit record required
  • Must pass a proficiency test for SAPC learner registration
