Brenda Fassie’s Niece Gemma Takes The Local Music Scene By Storm. A day ago Bongani Fassie shared a video of a young lady belting it out. Immediately the video caught attention, simply because the singer is quite gifted.

The young lady is singer-songwriter, Gemma Fassie who comes from a very musical family. She is related to the late Brenda Fassie, who is her grandfather’s sister. Brenda is one of the best musicians to come out of South Africa, and she is still making waves years after her passing. Unfortunately for Gemma, she never really got the opportunity to meet her as Brenda passed away when she was only about five or six years old. The great thing though is that, she will be ale to continue her aunt’s legacy through her own talent.

Although he has been in the industry, for sometime, some people are only recognizing her now thanks to Bongani’s video. On the video, Gemma is belting out Officially Missing You, a song released in 2004 by American singer, Tamia. Among those who was impressed by the powerhouse vocal that is Gemma, is none other than Grammy winner, Black Coffee.

Gemma grew up in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, and attributes her interest in becoming a singer to the areas that she grew up in. From the age of six, she was already getting requests to sing at local fashion shows. The upcoming star has always been exposure to different music genres and styles, which helped to ignite her passion for music and to shape herĀ  sound from Jazz to R&B, and even Hip Hop.

Gemma dropped her debut album After Hours, after signing to Retro Records. By the look of things, she is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the industry.
