Nakhane Toure Opens Up About The Hate He Got After Playing Gay In New Cultural Film

Nakhane Toure has opened up about the hate he received after playing the role of young gay man in the cultural-of-age film called The Wound. His lead role in the film was about Xhosa initiation rituals and homophobic desires within these rituals.

In an interview with the Mail & Guardian, he said that he was really surprised by the amount of hate he got after starring in the film. “I had prepared myself for a backlash of some sort, but I didn’t know it would be quite this homophobic’ He said. He went on to add that people have as far as swearing at his mom, he however understands that people are very mad.

He was apparently accused of selling his culture out and wanting everything to himself. Toure ensured people that he committed to the film and he is not planning on backsliding just because of people’s personal perceptions.

It is believed that the film is of importance, as it will create dialogue about cultural taboos in South Africa. He further added that  the story with respect and integrity, he however understood that it is a very sensitive issue.
