10 Things You Need To #KitYourDigs
This is your year, so make it about you and the things you love. When you imagine leaving home for college or varsity, the first thing you might visualize is the amazing décor that you are dying to showcase on your Instagram feed.
Gone will be the days of doilies, or your sister’s old Barbie bed spread, or that creepy picture of your great, great grandfather scowling at you from the lounge wall when you are watching TV, amongst other traits that may make your family home a far cry from the trendy and stylish student pad you have been dreaming of.
Sadly, many of us get carried away with rose gold-plated knick-knacks, marble printed paraphernalia worthy of a fabulous flat lay and the best flat screen TV to watch Date My Family in HD, before we get practical.
Moving out of home can be a bit of a reality check for some. Your mom won’t iron your clothes, wake you up in the morning with that cup of coffee you have grown accustomed to (who needs an alarm?) and your dad won’t be there to change the light bulbs while you’re cramming for a big exam.
It’s time to get ready for your very first course on adulting 101 – take note of these essential tips to successfully kit your student digs:
Create a digs that gives your friends a serious case of the wants . 10 Things You Need To #KITYOURDIGS
A SLEEPER COUCH
This could serve two purposes as a couch / bed. Depending on the space at your new place, a couch that can be slept on is useful when you have a guest staying over (announced or unannounced). You also need a couch to cozy up on when you are Netflix & Chilling or having guests over for drinks.
A CAN & BOTTLE OPENER
Most people forget this one. Never undervalue the use & convenience of tinned food, and beer of course. Your lifestyle is about to get a bit unpredictable, and you want to focus on learning and having fun. Always fill your pantry with canned goods for those nights where you can’t be bothered to cook or would rather be doing something else. But try not live on canned goods, as scurvy is still a thing.
CAUTIONARY LOAD SHEDDING BACK-UP
If you needed an excuse to stock up on candles, here it is. As we know sometimes when we least expect it the lights go out. It might be the eve before a big test or the night you finally got the courage to invite your crush to have dinner at your place. No matter the occasion, keep gorgeous candles up your sleeve just in case.
A RUBBISH BIN
Again, not a glamourous item, but a must have. It’s not ideal to keep an old Checkers shopping packet dangling precariously on your cupboard door handle filled with waste. Rather get a bin with a lid, and if you are an eco-warrior, add a green friendly recycling bin to the mix for paper and plastic.
A FIRST AID KIT
When you wake-up in the morning and aren’t feeling your best – what are you going to do? After you’ve ordered your hot wings and chips from Mr. Delivery it’s also wise to keep a First Aid Kit handy in your new home. Fill it with hangover life savers like Rehydrate, Panado, plasters, bandages and perhaps some other South African home staples like Vicks, and other meds for flu season. Your mom will be impressed if you sort out your own First Aid kit without prompting plus your housemates will thank you.
A TOILET BRUSH
Do yourself a favour and invest in one of these. Even if your new abode has a questionable toilet brush positioned next to the loo – chuck it out and get yourself a new one. Because, hygiene.
A DECENT SET OF TOWELS
Purchase a new set of towels that match. This will make life easier when it comes to laundry day and of course this will come in handy in communal bathrooms. Get a vibrant colour that matches your sparkling personality and stands out from the crowd, so you don’t have to hunt for your towel while dripping dry.
A WASHING BASKET / BAG
This one depends on your new home. You may need a basket to place in your bathroom or a bag might suit those trips to the laundromat a bit better. Either way you need a sturdy item to store your dirty clothes in. Some of us are quite used to the floor, but again – this is adulting 101 so take it to the next level with this one and purchase a washing basket.
CURTAINS
Unless you like your neighbors to keep tabs on you, invest in curtains to not only give you some privacy but also to hide the morning light from disturbing your beauty sleep. Curtains also add an extra touch of flare to your stunning new home – get a set that matches your new colour palette and impress your friends at your house warming.
A FULL-LENGTH MIRROR
About to post your OOTD? But the only thing you can find to check out your reflection is a tiny, cracked hand mirror you found at the bottom of your handbag. This simply won’t do. A full-length mirror will help you plan your outfits with ease and double up as great selfie station for your daily posts. Your followers will agree.
