Social Media Reacts to Former President Jacob Zuma’s Hour Stay In Prison

Social Media Reacts to Former President Jacob Zuma’s Hour Stay In Prison. Many have been waiting in anticipation to know the fate of former president Jacob Zuma. This comes after it was announced last evening that Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale and Justice Minister Ronald Lamola will this morning announce whether or not he will go back to prison.

In June 2021 the Constitutional Court found Zuma to be in contempt of court for his refusal to participate in the commission hearings. He was thus sentenced to 15 months in jail, of which he only served two. Zuma began serving his sentence in July, but in August he was taken to a hospital for surgery pertaining to an undisclosed medical condition. He was then granted medical parole and allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence from home.

This morning Zuma reported back at Estcourt Correctional Centre. A consideration was thus made as per legislation, including processes that were already unfolding in the management of correctional services. He is now one of the 9 4000 non-violent offenders who have been granted special remission. According to Lamola, Zuma was pardoned following a remission process that was ongoing due to over crowding in the prison.

Mr Zuma was not discharged, but was placed under community corrections where he continued serving his sentence, under strict conditions. Parole in South Africa is a form of punishment which is served by an inmate within the system of community corrections in terms of Chapter VI of the Correctional Services Act of 1998. When Mr Zuma left from a medical hospital upon placement on medical parole, he was continuously under community corrections serving his sentence. He was never a free man with effect from 8 July 2021,” Thobakgale said.
