The group was formed in the early 90s, with Stoan real name Tshepo Seate, Harold Matlhaku also known as Speedy and Jah Seed whose real name is Anesu Mupemhi as members. Lead vocalist Thandiswa Mazwai joined them later to make Bongo Maffin a group of four. After Thandiswa released her debut solo album, Zabalaza, in 2006, the group split up. Bongo Maffin reunited in 2019 and released a new album, From Bongo With Love.

While doing shows in the US, the award winning Thandiswa, confirmed that she is no longer part of Bongo Maffin. She stated that it’s been hard for her and her fellow members to find time to work together.

It has been hard finding the time to work together for the past year and many of the gigs Jahseed, Stoan and Speedy have been doing on their own. I will always be a member of the band but as people have seen we may not always be on stage together,” she said in a recent interview.

On Twitter one fan of the group asked Thandiswa why she no longer performs with Bongo Maffin. The individual also added that the group is no longer doing great things because she doesn’t perform with them. Keeping it short, Thandiswa revealed that she no longer works with them.

“I’m sorry I don’t work at that company anymore,” Thandiswa clarified.
