South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters Clinches The Miss Universe Crown. Making us proud, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has been crowned Miss Universe 2017. The event that was held Sunday night in Las Vegas saw 22 year old Nel-Peters beat first runner-up Miss Colombia Laura González and second runner-up Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett.
Nel-Peters becomes the second South African to win the title after Margaret Gardiner won the title in 1978. The competition’s top 13 finalists were Thailand, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Spain, Ireland, Croatia, Great Britain, USA, Brazil, Canada, Philippines, Venezuela and China.
