Job Description

  • Implement the vision for the website as outlined by the head of digital
  • Help plan the daily and weekly diary in conjunction with the head of digital
  • Manage the online editorial team
  • Direct the workflow and editorial choices
  • Direct angles and news stories to focus on day-to-day
  • Help train and mentor younger members of the team
  • Run regular meetings with the editorial online team
  • Work closely with staff across the company and in other editorial divisions including news, politics, sports, business and programming
  • Ensure the quality of all content produced on the website
  • Thoroughly sub content that comes your way
  • Re-write clumsy sentencing and wording
  • Check for errors and correct spelling
  • Assist with fact-checking and verification
  • Work cleanly and quickly
  • Manage the team sub-editor and together enforce the style guide and build upon it
  • Assist in updating the site according to the shift schedule
  • Assist in implementing good SEO and online technique in the creation of web content, specifically for headlines
  • Keep tabs on written content on our social media and static pages to ensure the best possible writing
  • Be a committed part of the online team and contribute to the overall success of the division
  • Respond to breaking news outside of shift times where necessary
  • Read and follow news and political developments, particularly locally
  • Help constantly improve and innovate the work produced by the digital division

Requirements

  • A love for the English language and a stickler for details and language rules
  • A passion for writing information in the most effective way possible
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, react quickly and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong team and leadership skills
  • Must have strong verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Leadership or management role within a news environment
  • At least three years’ subbing experience, preferably within a print or mainstream digital news environment
  • Excellent subbing skills
  • Proven ability to work within a team and evidence of leadership skills
  • A thorough understanding of the format of various article types and what is required for each: news articles, features, Q&As, profiles
  • A passion for gets South Africans talking and presenting content around these topics in unique and innovative ways
  • A passion for hard news and sniffing out the best angles to interest your audience
  • Tip-top researching skills using the internet, social media and other broadcast sources coupled with strong verification and fact-checking skills
